The land application of biosolids provides a safe means to recapture a valuable resource. By beneficially utilizing the by-product of the wastewater treatment process, Virginia is able to participate in a recycling program that diverts thousands of tons of waste from landfills and incinerators each year. Treated sludge or "biosolids" is made up of organic matter, nutrients, and trace elements. Because of its nutrient value and organic content, biosolids can be used as an agricultural fertilizer and soil conditioner. Through the biosolids recycling program, we support the local agricultural community, which in turn benefits everyone in the Commonwealth.
